Supporting Results Structural Elucidation of [M+H] + m/z = 101.0232 Analysis of the n-butylamine-treated RNA from both E. coli and S. venezuelae indeed revealed the presence of a species consistent with the double addition of n-butylamine to the C4H4O3 unknown and the loss of two molecules of water (observed [M+H] + m/z = 211.1826; expected m/z for C12H23N2O= 211.1805. Treatment with d9-butylamine resulted in the formation of a product 18.1109 Da higher in mass (observed [M+H] + m/z = 211.1826; expected m/z for C12H23N2O= 211.1805), confirming that this product indeed arose from the addition of two molecules of n-butylamine.
